Signature Programs 2015-2016

Through visual and performing arts workshops, performances and festivals, their mission is to give youth from all backgrounds the tools, confidence and inspiration to make a positive difference in their communities and the world… from the inside out.  Inside Out Community Arts is a nationally award-winning non-profit organization that utilizes theatre, movement, music, writing, and visual arts to explore the imagination in a positive manner in order to build self-esteem, conflict resolution and socialization skills.

The ASES program is committed to ensuring that students develop their potential as lifelong learners by providing meaningful, student-centered learning experiences through innovative enrichment activities and high quality standards-based academic support.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) provides educationally and economically disadvantaged students with the skills and resources to be successful in school and career in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

Determined to Succeed identifies motivated, low-income middle school students who show an exceptional determination to succeed and work above and beyond what is expected of them, but who are at risk of getting lost in the public school system.  Beginning in middle school, continuing through high school and into college, the program provides year-round academic and enrichment support and resources students need to succeed in middle and high school, so that they may successfully apply, be accepted to and graduate from college.

Fresh Focus: A New Shot at Life: Our new enhanced photography program encourages at-risk youth to shoot with cameras, not with guns, to use their critical eye to evaluate, and, “through their eyes” help educate others about their community. With new computer digital technology and visual communication tools, this program connects children and youth living in economically-distressed situations to their surroundings.

Guitar: A Mini Orchestra: Aware of the guitar’s unique sound possibilities, Beethoven called it a “mini-orchestra”, capable of melody, harmony and bass lines played simultaneously. By teaching basic music rhythm notation (fractions), math skills are increased and higher brain functioning is enhanced. Students learn scales and chord variations exploring contemporary melodies and cross-culturally relevant songs.

Dance for Life introduces and inspires young dancers to know and understand world culture, creative expression and joyful celebration of Dance as an elemental force of life. City Hearts incorporates Classical Ballet technique and trains students in a variety of Dance forms.

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) works toward helping local schools provide students with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to pursue a career in science, mathematics, and engineering.  Whaley currently has two PLTW classes – Robotics and Design and Animation.

Avid teaches skills and behaviors for academic success and provides intensive support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships.  AVID creates a positive peer group for students and develops a sense of hope for personal achievement gained through hard work and determination.  As a result, policymakers and educators now consider AVID's mission to be an essential strategy for closing the achievement gap, making college access and success available to all students. AVID is offered at grades 6th, 7th, and 8th.
